There is no doubt the impact that war can have on soldiers both at the time and for the years after it. Post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD, is an anxiety disorder that can occur after experiencing a distressing or traumatic event. Its symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, numbness, feeling highly anxious, reliving the traumatic event, invasive memories of the trauma, and many others. Not only can PTSD affect those who directly experienced the trauma, but it can also impact the family of those who suffer from this problem. This can be a devastating problem for those who suffer from it.
Between the years of 2014 -16 it is estimated that about 6% of current and ex-personnel suffered from PTSD (1) in the UK. In the US, it is thought up to 30% of Vietnam’s veterans, (2) have had PTSD with 15 currently diagnosed with the condition. This points to the longevity of the problem, as the Vietnam war ended in 1973. The figures for the Iraq war, (often called OIF and OEF) are that in any given year approximately 11- 20 % of veterans have PTSD. I also think this points to the ineffectiveness of many of the conventional treatment protocols used to treat PTSD. PTSD is a huge problem that can have a devastating impact on current and ex-military personnel and their families.
